So, 2014 is upon us and everyone seems to be making new years resolutions. I've tried that in the past, but I always seem to feel like it is more pressure and if I don't accomplish them, then I'm a failure. So I'm calling them goals this year.
Some goals for 2014:
~Gain my flexibility back. When I stopped dancing full time I lost a lot of it--and seemed to gain a bunch of weight. So here's to gaining the flexibility back.
~Improve my dance. Whether it is learning a new style or continuing with what I've got. When I dance, I feel better and I want to feel better the entire year this year.
~Decrease the clutter. I started with our living room and kitchen. Threw away 5 large garbage bags full of stuff just from those two rooms. Next up is the loft
~Finish the loft. We started this with buying a few usable pieces of furniture second hand (got amazing deals on them too). Right now the space is there but just not all that usable. It is a multi-purpose room and I would like to use it more, but the ability to use it is diminished because we don't have everything in its place or a place for anything else. I love scouring second hand stores for things that people give away and I want and can get for an amazing deal. Office furniture seems to be given away rather regularly (especially the old solid wood stuff) so I get it, re-varnish, add drawer pulls and voila! furniture that looks like it goes together.
~Replace the green carpet. Yep, my carpet is green. We bought the house like that and haven't replaced it yet. We've been saving and I'm hoping that this summer we will be able to get a good deal and replace the majority of it. We may have to go room by room as we do it since moving all the stuff out of the rooms takes some muscle power.
~Organize the armory. You heard me right, the armory. We have an armory. And we keep adding to it by putting things on the floor, which isn't all that great when Jakob or I need to find a specific prop or weapon. So we're figuring out how we can make that room usable and functional. We're staring with hooks on the walls for the rapiers and purchasing a few more wall sword hangers. Perhaps that'll get the majority of the swords in a usable position and we know where things are.
~Organize my sewing space. That room is a total bloody disaster. I've let it go since I now have that room to myself. I keep buying fabric (which is a drug habit that I'm not going to stop any time soon :p) and then running out of room to place it. Some of my fabric bins have made their way into the armory and neither of us are happy about that because I lose track of what I've got.
~Try and make a costume once a month. Either make one from scratch or finish one that I started and then put away. I've got a lot of those and it doesn't help that I'm not getting film or theatre jobs making costumes so I can actually put to use the stuff that I have made.
~Stay healthy! This is a big one for me. I've been struggling with my health (both physical and emotional) this past year and my goal is to make sure I don't do to myself what happened this year. With food being more and more modified, I've had major reactions this past year that have scared me. So, I've got to be more careful with what I'm eating. I grew a lot of what we ate during the summer and that helped. Emotionally, that is a hard one. I've always struggled with that and around here, well, lets just say that it is harder for me than it should be. No, I'm not getting farther into it on this blog, but my goal is to have a better mental and emotional state this year.
I'll probably come up with more as the year progresses and I'll probably drop a few of these as the year progresses because I'll become frustrated with something or other.
Oh well, that seems to be the luck of things.
Anyway, we had a great New Years Eve. Friends came over, good food, started a group reading of "William Shakespeare's Star Wars: Verily, a New Hope" and laughed a lot. When you know that movie rather well, and then hear the dialogue be used in "Shakespearean language" it gets even more entertaining. Have it read by actors who are Star Wars aficionados, and you have the ultimate reading. Then New Years day we went to go see a movie with my brother (who slept over because he didn't want to drive home that late), a late lunch with my family, and then an evening with Jakob all to myself before he starts rehearsal again.
Here's to a great 2014 for all.
