Happy New Year everyone! Yeesh, the last year seems to have flown by with everything that we were doing. It was really weird in December for me because it was the first time in many many years that I didn't have any tests or finals to contend with. It seems that the roles were reversed and I was helping Jakob study for his final (he did well in his class, yay Hubby!) and I was moving computers around for others to take tests before the winter holiday break.
Our winter break was good. I ended up vegging out at home, working on some projects that I've been putting to the side lately. I started a cross-stitch project. I usually give up about half way through because it just gets annoying or I don't want to do it anymore, but I'm going to try and finish this one off. I also saw a few movies and went shopping, but those are for a few other posts. . .
But I've really been thinking a lot lately; well, more like since last Thursday, about why people feel the need to break in a steal things. We had a break-in at the school this winter break and the thiefs stole the new computers we received (about 45-50 computers), but they didn't grab the other older computers. The older computers are about 2 or 3 years old and they work really well, but they just wanted the new ones. They also passed up a few other things; we really dodged a bullet where those are concerned. We're hoping that a few things happen in order for us to get the computers back, but we're leaving that up to the detectives and police right now. The district is trying to replace the damaged cases as quickly as possible. The school is trying to keep this out of the media and also not to scare the kids, so we're not taking the damaged cases around to the classrooms. Some of the kids have been asking for the computers and why they aren't coming around to the classrooms. We just end up telling them that the computers are being serviced and once we get them back they will be back in the classrooms. I think that students should feel safe in school, but even I don't feel safe in the schools anymore. I really never did because of everything that I saw happening in high school and then college, but these are elementary students, they shouldn't have to worry about stuff like that right now. The school is a title 1 school, meaning that it is a public school, but just in a different category, so most of the students are able to use computers only at school because there isn't anything at home. But all of us are keeping our ears open for any chatter or anything suspicious happening. The school is also on a kind of "red alert", so it is a different feeling for all the teachers and staff. We'll see what happens with time. I just hope those who did this are caught and punished. Why would you steal from a school! You're stealing from children. I understand times are tough, but I guess people get desperate.
But other than the stress around work, life is good. We're paying down our debts, we're healthy and happy. For Christmas/Winter Solstice we went to Eve Mass with my parents then had food! Cheese sticks, quiche, veggie rolls, tater rounds, rice, black beans, potato bread, sparkling cider, guarana. Yum. This is stuff we've had every year for as many years as I can think of, it has become tradition in my family. My mom makes the best black beans to top rice that I've ever had. The Christmas morning was lazy for Jakob and I. We just slept in, then watched a bit of the rose parade. We went over to my parents in the afternoon to open presents, more eating, and to watch the rose bowl. I think I watched a bit of it, then ended up losing interest. I ended up playing with my big kitty until he decided that he wanted to sleep on Jakob's lap, so he was stuck with a 18 lb cat on his lap for the rest of the game. For our New Year celebration we went to the children's carnival at the Towne Centre Mall and did a photo booth starting our fundraising for Toys for Tots. We did rather well and everyone was safer this year than in years past. Jakob and the group were on the front page of the Our Town section for the Daily Herald and I was on a video for the website for the first night celebration. Here is the link to the article and picture and the link for the video.
More to come later!
